Omega 3 for Depression

Can fish oil help with depression ?

Research has shown that people with mood disorders like depression benefit from fish oil supplements.

Lack of omega-3 fatty acids and in particular DHA has been linked by researchers to depression.

About 60% of our brains are made up of fat, and about half of that fat is DHA omega 3 fatty acids, which is one of the key components in fish oils, particularly high quality ones.

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential in the healthy formation of the brain’s nerve cell membranes and membrane fluidity.

Research has shown that changes in membrane fluidity will have a negative effect on behavior, mood and mental function.

The evidence seems to show that fish oil can help alleviate mild to moderate depression in some instances, but serious cases of depression need special help and relying on fish oils for such cases is not recommended.

Overall, we know that Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are essential for brain function and development.

So it isn’t a stretch to reason that depression and other mental disorders may find high quality fish oil at least beneficial.
