Before you buy organic flax seed oil, take a few moments to read this article. It could save you money and improve your health.

First, if the oils are not certified USDA organics, then there is no guarantee that the plants are grown with the use of pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. Organics will normally cost about twice what you would pay for those grown by traditional modern farming practices. So, if it doesn’t cost more, then it is probably not what the label says that it is.

You might think that manufacturers must be honest in their labeling of supplements, but that’s not entirely true. It is the manufacturers’ responsibility to ensure that a supplement is safe.

Third, as far as dietary supplements go, there is no reason to take flaxseed oils. They do not contain nutrients that cannot be found in abundant food sources. If you always cook with canola or olive oil, instead of other kinds of oils, then you are getting the same nutrient found in flaxseeds. It’s called alpha-linolenic acid or ALA.

Yes, ALA is an omega-3. Research indicates that increasing one’s intake of omega3s may reduce the risk of heart disease, but only if a person also decreases their intake of omega-6s. You don’t need organic flax seed oil.

Fourth, the studies concerning the benefits of omega3s were conducted using Docosahexaenoic acid and Eicosapentaenoic acid (DHA and EPA), which are found in fish, not in any vegetable sources, at all. A certain kind of marine algae contains DHA. It’s the best choice for strict vegans, but it is not a source of EPA. So, you would have to take more of it to get the same results.

Fifth, in the observational studies indicating that people with a higher omega-3 intake had less heart disease, organic flax seed oil had nothing to do with it. The people ate fish, seafood, olives, walnuts and other sources of omega-3s. People don’t generally eat flaxseed. It doesn’t taste good.

To sum it up, there is no proven need or benefit for ALA supplementation in the average person’s diet. There is a need for supplemental DHA and EPA for most people, unless they eat a serving of Alaskan salmon every single day of their lives.
