Fish Oil Dietary Supplement

Large scale clinical trials have shown that a fish oil dietary supplement (which supplies essential omega-3 fatty acids) significantly reduces the incidence of heart disease.

In the 1960’s medical research established a link between the amount of cholesterol in a person’s blood and hardening of the arteries. It was thought that the amount of cholesterol was increased by the amount of fat eaten. However this research was imperfect because the Greek population ate a lot of fat, but had few heart problems. Later the Inuit Eskimos in Greenland were found to eat huge amounts of seal and whale blubber, but not suffer from cardiac failure.

What was the magic ingredient eaten by these two populations which protected their hearts? And this despite having a large intake of fat which most Americans would consider unhealthy.

Two Danish doctors took blood samples from the Eskimos in Greenland. With the help of a world renowned fat expert from Minnesota, they identified two fatty acids which were present in the Inuit but not in significant amounts in the Danish population. These two fats were found to be docosahexaenoic acid [DHA] and eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA]. They are part of the family of omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for good health.

A variety of food processing techniques and the grain dominated diet of farm animals meant that DHA and EPA were more or less removed from food. The human body can manufacture its own essential fatty acids given a supply of plant derived ALA omega-3, but the best source is from fish oil and other seafoods.
