Fish Oil Concerns
The most common concern people think of when they hear about fish oil is potential harmful contaminants that fish were exposed to in the ocean.
There are regulations that supplement companies must meet to stay below certain contaminant levels but certain companies have much more stringent requirements and use fish types that have little to no contaminants.
A company might even provide their certificate of analysis which discloses the purity levels of their supplements and if they meet or exceed recommended safety levels.
The potential side effects of taking fish oil can be burps, gas, bad breath or bloating, which can happen because the product is low quality and has even gone rancid from not properly storing the fish oil prior to production.
Some companies mask this rancid smell with a fragrance on the capsule.
If you find a natural, fresh and high-quality product, you will most likely not experience any of side effects mentioned above.
One thing you should be careful about is if you are on blood thinning medication.
If you take omega-3 it can have a blood thinning effect, which can be dangerous in conjunction with blood thinning medication so talk with your doctor.
Overall omega-3 fish oils have few side effects or health risks and can be considered safe for the vast majority of the population.
If you’re taking the correct dosage that is usually written on the label, you will likely not run into any problems.
We give fish oil to our toddler and I made sure that I understood any and all potential side effects especially when you hear about mercury and lead contaminants in fish.

The fish oil I recommend has none of the side effects mentioned above as their standards for fish oil freshness and contaminant free purity levels lead the industry and I feel that they provide a more detailed disclosure about their product than other brands I looked at.
