Benefits of Fish Oil

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (the AHRQ is part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services) concluded in a report in 2004 that fish oil helps reduce death incidence from heart issues. The study concluded that the omega 3 fatty acids which are found in fish and in fish oil supplements help against all sorts of heart and circulatory system conditions. People who already had these problems can greatly benefit from taking fish oil supplements as it reduces their overall risk of death.

Fish and fish oil are the richest in omega 3 fatty acids among all aliments which contain the acids.

Another benefit fish oil has is that it does not alter the cholesterol levels (not the HDL cholesterol, nor the LDL cholesterol levels are changed due to the omega 3 fatty acids).

Fish oil help the human body in various ways: it slightly lowers high blood pressure and it reduces the risk of irregular heart beats in patients who have recently suffered a heart attack. Patients with clogged arteries found that their exercise capability has increased after taking fish oil supplements. Also, fish oil helps reduce the risk of coronary artery re-blockage after the patient has undergone an angioplasty.

Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D., the AHRQ director, stated that these sorts of studies on omega 3 and fish oil benefits are important because they help both the health care professionals and the public know the benefits omega 3 fatty acids can bring to their health. These studies act like a starting point for future development of drugs intended to protect the heart and the circulatory system.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) through its Office of Dietary Supplements is very interested in these findings and has started financing more such studies to better understand the key role the omega 3 fatty acids play in protecting the health and fighting against diseases.

More than six studies are conducted each year as health care specialists are interested in discovering more about the fatty acids’ action, as there still are areas in which data is insufficient for any definite conclusion to be drawn.

Until now, it has been found that omega 3 fatty acids play an important role in protecting the heart and the brain, but studies are carried out to see in what other areas these fatty acids can prove beneficial to human health.
